What is ‘Speculative Fashion?’

If you read the sort of books I read, you’re probably familiar with “speculative fiction,” a term that encompasses genres like historical fiction, science fiction, fantasy, and horror, and allows them to exist in a common nebulous space of “stories that depart from reality.”

Well, “speculative fashion” is meant to evoke the same spirit, only with costuming. I don’t like to pin myself down to just one genre. One day I might be creating what is traditionally thought of as “cosplay” for a fan convention, while the next I might be researching historical textiles and construction methods. What you will find here is anything ranging from comic book and video game characters, to literary-inspired creations, to painstakingly replicated historical pieces.

I have been sewing for over 25 years, and what I’ve learned has largely been autodidactic. It must run in the family, as my great grandmother was an old-world seamstress by trade, and I am proud to carry on her legacy. I have dabbled in many fiber arts, including sewing, quilting, knitting, cross-stitch, embroidery, and lace-making. Additionally, many of our family’s costumes include elements of foam, plastic, and electronics created by my spouse.

We started this site as a way of showcasing our hobby, and we’re happy to share it with you!

Throwback Thursday: Star Wars Attack of the Cute

I thought I had one more year of picking out my kid’s Halloween costume. The plan was to recreate this iconic duo of Wicket and Leia from Return of the Jedi, which is my favorite Star Wars film:

The ewok wicket pointing a spear at Princess Leia, dressed in a camo poncho and helmet from the movie Return of the Jedi.

But the two-year-old had other plans.

He hadn’t seen the movies yet, but of course they permeate pop culture. We came home from a consignment sale that summer with this mask and red lightsaber. And so he steadfastly insisted on dressing instead as “Dark Vader.”

Photo of Darth Vader from Star Wars, a photo of a child wrapped up in a play cape wearing a Darth Vader mask and holding an oversized, red light saber, and a photo of felt pieces cut out to resemble Darth Vader's electronic control panel.

I didn’t want a store-bought costume for three reasons. 1) I look forward to making Halloween costumes every year; 2) I thought I could actually make a costume more detailed version than what I could find ready-made; and 3) I wanted it to be comfortable so he would wear it trick-or-treating. I studied photos from the film to figure out all the fiddly bits, and then set out to recreate Vader’s capes and control panels in felt and nylon knit. I slipped the belt panels onto a black webbing strap and created a “chain” for the cloak with metallic braid and Velcro. The base of the costume was from the closet: a black long-sleeved shirt, black sweatpants, and black converse–because of course Vader would rock Chuck Taylors.

Five photos of a blond child wearing a Darth Vader Halloween costume. In some he is holding a black plastic pumpkin bucket, and in others he holds his red light saber menacingly.

Sad to say, the mask never had a chance, and the light saber and gloves were both eventual casualties while trick-or-treating. However, the costume was still immediately recognizable and, needless to say, well received in the neighborhood.

This is the first year we adults made an effort to dress up with the theme, a test run of sorts for our eventual family cosplays. Dad got a plain muslin tunic and a quick-and-dirty Jedi robe from thick-spun brown linen and one of the Simplicity costume patterns. Meanwhile, my closet held everything I needed–can you even call yourself a Star Wars nerd if you can’t dress like a Jedi exclusively with items from your wardrobe?

A photo of brown, rough-spun linen fabric on the bolt, a photo of a man in a brown Jedi robe holding hands with a diminutive Darth Vader, a photo of a posing family dressed as Star Wars characters, and a photo of a woman with buns and braids in her hair wearing brown and purple clothing reminiscent of the Star Wars movie costumes.

So, there you have it: A Halloween 2013 retrospective. Thanks for reading along, and have a happy Star Wars Day! May the Fourth be with you!
